Business of the Month-Johnny’s Bar & Grill
Owners: Cory & Jayne Bartrom

This month I am happy to announce we are featuring Johnny’s Bar and Grill who has now been in business for 1 year! Cory and Jayne Bartrom took over April 1st, 2018, and opened their doors April 10th, 2018. Cory has worked part time for Jumbo (Jim Youngwirth) at Johnny’s Bar and Grill from the time he was 14 years old. Cory and Jayne decided it was to time to buy the business because they were not ready to see it close and knew this town needed it to keeps its doors open. “We also wanted something for our children.” Jayne says. Johnny’s kept 3 previous working employees from the switch over and has hired 7 more employees this year. I asked the Bartroms what their management style is. They both laughed and agreed it was a good cop/bad cop routine, but they still like to have fun! “I am more of the person they are able to talk to. They can come to me, and I will give them more of a constructive criticism as opposed to Cory’s blunt and straight to the point answer. We like to have fun, but we want to make sure we are getting our job done too at the same time,” Jayne said.
Does your company help the community where it is located? “We try and help out as much as we can, but with us being new we got to make sure we are drawing the line. We do help where we can!”
Describe some of your customers? What makes them choose you over your competitors? “We have our regulars, the ones who come in everyday for lunch and play cribbage, our regular card ladies that come in every Thursday to play cards.” “Small town feel, everyone loves to catch up on their daily gossip or sit down and just chat.”
What are the biggest issues for running this business? “Help. It’s hard to schedule how many to work, such as the nights where the weather is bad or when church is cancelled where we are just swamped, or nights when the weather is bad and we are slow. You never know what it’s going to do or what people are going to do.”
What is your piece of advice to someone starting out in this business? “Communicate; make sure that if you’re in business with someone you are always keeping that communication line open and to ask a lot of questions!”
Anything you would like to tell your customers? “THANK YOU! I don’t think either one of us were expecting this last year to go as well as it did. We definitely have a lot of support that’s for sure!”
